Nobel Laureate Visits JPL
Dr. William Phillips of NIST-Gaithersburg, the 1997 recipient of the Nobel Prize in
Physics, visited JPL to present a talk in the 'Director's Topical Seminar Series.'
Phillips is an investigator in the Fundamental Physics program and was recently
awarded a flight definition grant for his proposal "Condensate Laboratory Aboard
the Space Station." Phillips' talk "Atom Optics with Coherent de Broglie Waves"
described experiments being performed in the NIST labs with laser-cooled atoms.
In visits with the JPL managers, Phillips related his support for the Fundamental
Physics program of research in the areas of laser-cooled atoms and the unique
opportunities that the microgravity environment aboard the International Space
Station presents to these experiments.
