BEST Experiment Successfully Develops a New Confinement Material

Boundary Effects on the Superfluid Transition (BEST) is a joint experiment between the University of California, Santa Barbara and JPL that is scheduled to fly on the 2nd mission of the Low Temperature Microgravity Physics Facility. Working closely with industrial partners, the BEST team has successfully developed a new type of confinement media suitable for the study of dynamic effects and dimensionality crossover in critical phenomena in liquid helium. The confinement media is a new type of Micro-channel Plate (MCP). The glass plate is 2 mm thick, and is densely populated with ~2.5 million highly uniform, non-crossing, through holes. Instead of the traditional cylindrical holes, the new MCP has a hole shape of rectangular cross section of 5 microns by 50 microns.
