The Optical Society of America has presented the R. W. Wood Prize for 2002 to Pierre Meystre
of the University of Arizona. The prize is presented in recognition of an outstanding
discovery, a scientific or technological achievement, or an invention. The citation reads
"Awarded to Pierre Meystre for seminal contributions to free-electron laser, cavity QED,
and micromaser; and most recently, the "invention" of the new field of nonlinear atom
optics." Meystre holds the Quantum Optics Chair in the Optical Sciences Center at Arizona
and is the principal investigator for the Fundamental Physics task "Atom Optics in Controlled
and Microgravity Environments."
