DYNAMX/CQ Team Observes Onset of Convection

Initial results indicate that the DYNAMX/CQ team has observed the onset of convection from the self-organized heat transport state, within their 'T4' prototype cryoprobe during ground-based measurements at the University of New Mexico. The possibility of observing this convective onset from the self-organized state in long experimental cells was discussed in a 1996 article published by Guenter Ahlers and Feng-Chuan Liu in the Journal of Low Temperature Physics. These interesting experimental results will be presented at the LT-23 low temperature conference in Japan in August, and will be published soon.
